Procurement Forester

Location: St. Marys Lumber, located at 153 Aviation Way, St Marys, PA (Elk County):

Responsible for the purchase of hardwood timber and logs, and the safe execution of the contracts that conduct harvesting and transportation of those items.  


Responsibilities:
Conduct technical fieldwork necessary to measure and appraise hardwood timber and logs.

Use compiled field data and internal pricing to prepare contract offerings for bid and direct purchase of timber/logs.

Negotiate, prepare and ensure timely execution of contracts for harvesting of forest products.

Manage subcontracted logging operations and logistics to ensure timely, well executed timber/log harvests.

Liaison between Sawmill Manager and Logging Crews to ensure log quality/inventory levels.

Monitor project quality and compliance with contract terms and relevant regulations.

Perform/manage site reclamation work as required per contract.

Ensure projects are completed within budgetary and timeline restrictions.

Use internal inventory management system to compare/evaluate timber harvest results against expectations.

Provide backup on occasion to log scaling and log sale personnel in yard.

Monitor industry/markets for trends/changes.

Maintain professional certifications/memberships as appropriate.


Desired Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry preferred and 5 years of procurement experience.

Solid understanding of PA Hardwood Timber resources/markets.

General knowledge of logging/hauling practices (BMP’s).

Basic knowledge of sawmill operation.

Excellent time management, organizational, math and, communication skills.

Strong work ethic, self-starter and, high degree of personal integrity.

Efficient while working with computers.

Valid PA Driver license.

Able to work in all weather conditions and lift/move 50+ lbs.

Yard Supervisor/Log Scaler

Location: WBL Hardwoods sawmill located at 871 Alverda Road, P.O. Box 66, Nicktown, PA  15762:


Job Description:  Managing input of all incoming logs into BING inventory system; daily operation of resale log yard; and spacial management of log storage and sales areas of the facility.  This position also provides assistance to the Procurement Team on a seasonal basis, as needed.

Responsibilities:
Manage outside areas to provide functional log storage and resale accommodations.

Tag, grade and scale all incoming logs in BING inventory system.

Identify potential sale logs, direct relocation of sorted logs to resale and production areas for storage.

Prepare logs for resale (clip, saver, etc).

Work with buyers during log purchases.

Compile and reconcile completed log sale data using handheld data collector.

Load containers and trucks.

Oversee loading and unloading activities, maximizing efficiency while maintaining safe traffic flow.

Participate in monthly forestry meetings to comment on incoming inventory, other issues.

Perform all duties with safety as top priority.

Serve on site safety committee.

Seasonally, as needed:

Cruise timber and gather data for procurement staff

Grade, scale and purchase logs from offsite vendors


Desired Skills and Experience:

Associate's Degree in Forestry or equiv. exp preferred..

Proficient in specie ID (tree, log and lumber)..

Working knowledge of log grading rules (for footage, quality)

Able to operate chain saw, rubber tired loader, log truck/log loader.

Specific vision abilities - close and distance, color.

Excellent time management, organizational, math and, communication skills.

Strong work ethic, self-starter and, high degree of personal integrity.

Efficient while working with computers.

Valid PA Driver license.

Able to work in all weather conditions and lift/move 50+ lbs.
